Disciplinary Advice Note
Complaints in general are on the rise and most professionals can expect to receive a complaint at
some point in their career. Nevertheless, we understand that receiving a complaint can be both
upsetting and stressful.
We also acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes at times and the Faculty’s primary aim is not to
punish genuine mistakes but to maintain and improve standards through education and support.
Some complaints arise out of misunderstandings that can be easily corrected. Some arise from
genuine mistakes or one-off uncharacteristic mishaps. Some are indicative of a more fundamental
issue which may need to be addressed.
The Faculty hopes that the following information, drawn from the Faculty’s popular Seminar “A
Whistlestop Tour of Complaints” may assist you at this difficult time.
