Richard Garry, on behalf of the North London Forum, will be delivering the subject on:

  • The elements of Engineering – Structures made simple

Richard Garry, Fellow of the Faculty, is a chartered structural engineer and has been working as a sole practitioner for 30 years. He has also been involved in party wall matters for around 25 years – since before the new Act. Richard is also a qualified mediator. He has worked at a number of large civil and structural practices, and on some extremely challenging projects, including offshore structures – he designed the first accommodation module with anti-vibration mountings (to help workmen have a decent standard of living on board) – historic and grade II* listed buildings, churches, hospitals, theatres and the Hong Kong Mass Transit railway. In the mid ‘70’s Richard was involved with development of structural programs and may have been the innovator of the spreadsheet!

His specialisms are refurbishment of historic structural elements, foundations, building damage including subsidence and acting as party wall surveyor with knowledge of structures. Richard is frequently asked to advise party wall surveyors on structural matters.

Apart from his working life, Richard has studied practical philosophy for over 45 years. He is married with one son lives in Southgate. He was a governor of a local school for 15 years.
