16:00 - 17:30
On behalf of the the Faculty and the North London Forum, Richard Garry has organised a Faculty Forum Webinar which will be presented to you by the video-conferencing app called ZOOM on Thursday 17th March 2022 at 4.00 p.m. until 5.30 p.m.
Richard Garry will be delivering on the following subject:
- What is a structure under S6?
S6 of the Act has 16 references to the words ‘building or structure’. S 20 does not define the word ‘structure’. Is it a wall, a fence, a drain? This presentation gives insight into how to interpret the meaning of ‘structure’. Not as simple as one might wish!
Richard has been a structural engineer for over 40 years and has had his own practice for over 30. He started working on party wall matters more than 25 years ago and has found that both disciplines feed into and work with each other very helpfully. He has acted as acted as surveyor under the previous and present Acts and has advised party wall surveyors on engineering matters. As well as advising on structural design, he also prepares various reports on damage and structural problems. Last year, Richard presented two seminars to the Faculty on structural engineering and has written a paper for the IStructE magazine on the workings of the Act. He has given a talk to a structural engineers forum on the Party Wall etc. Act and has offered to present a course to the IStructE members on the Act – without success so far. He is extremely keen for there to be greater understanding of structures amongst surveyors and much better understanding of the Party Wall etc. Act within the engineering profession – work in progress. He had been chair of the North London Forum for many years until covid intervened.
