How do I apply for membership?

The criteria and process to join the Faculty is dependent on the level of membership required. Details of eligibility and application process for each level of membership we offer, are described below.

STUDENT

Full-Time Students may apply directly to the Faculty with no prior experience or qualification required.

MEMBER

There are two routes to full membership:

1, If you already have experience in dealing with party wall matters and have a sound knowledge of the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 and construction knowledge then you can apply for a direct interview.  Your application will be supported by providing two party wall awards (one as the agreed surveyor and one where you were one of two surveyors) and corresponding letters of appointment.  You will also be required to provide a Notice on behalf of the Building Owner, a letter to the Building Owner advising them of the name of the Third Surveyor that has been selected and a copy of the covering letter when serving the award.  Once your application form has been received you will be contacted to undertake an interview.  Two copies of the Awards and supporting documentation are required to be submitted to the Administration Office at least two weeks prior to interview.  Upon successful completion of your interview, you will be invited into full membership.

2, If your experience in dealing with party wall matters is very limited but you have a construction industry background then you should attend our Two-day Party Wall Seminar.  This takes you from serving ‘Notice’ to undertaking preparing an ‘Award’ as part of a paper exercise on the second day.

Once you have successfully completed our course you are eligible to apply for full membership of the Faculty, subject to attending an interview.  Your membership application will be supported by submitting two “dummy” party wall awards (one as an agreed surveyor and one where you are one of two surveyors) and corresponding letters of appointment. You will also be required to provide a Notice on behalf of the Building Owner, a letter to the Building Owner advising them of the name of the Third Surveyor that has been selected and a copy of the covering letter when serving the award.  Two copies of the Awards and supporting documentation are required to be submitted to the Administration Office at least two weeks prior to interview.  All of this will be prepared from information and plans given as part of the course pack.   Upon successful completion of your interview, you will be invited into full membership.

FELLOW

This is for party wall surveyors who have a lot of experience dealing in party wall matters.  You are required to be a Fellow if you wish to be recognised by the Faculty as a Third Surveyor.  The requirement to become a Fellow is to attend a Third Surveyor one day seminar followed by an interview.

Once a Fellow of the Faculty, that person is then put on the Faculty’s Third Surveyor register used by both the appointing officer of the Local Authority and the Secretary of State.

Existing Member Application:
Attend 1 day course plus professional interview (for very experienced surveyors).
Completed application form to be supported by a Third Surveyor award to be brought to interview.  If a ‘live’ Third Surveyor award is unavailable produce a ‘dummy’ award from instructions supplied with seminar paperwork.

New Application:
Attend 1 day course plus professional interview (for very experienced surveyors).
Completed application form to be supported by two awards (one as an agreed surveyor and one where there are two surveyors) and corresponding letters of appointment, a notice on behalf of the Building Owner, a letter to the Building Owner advising them of the name of the Third Surveyor that has been selected and a copy of the covering letter when serving the Award.
Two copies of the awards and supporting documentation to be sent in to the Administration office at least two weeks prior to an interview along with two copies of the Third Surveyor’s award.  If a ‘live’ Third Surveyor award is unavailable produce a ‘dummy’ award from instructions supplied with seminar paperwork.
