Why become a member?
The Faculty offers support and education for our members involved in Party Wall and related matters. We provide a number of levels of membership to suit different needs and levels of competency. You will have a construction knowledge, which is a pre-requisite to applying.
The Faculty is a non-profit making organisation whose principles are the raising of the standard and awareness of party wall matters from an informed, proven academic background with an open information shared basis.
The Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors is an academic and educational-based organisation that specialises in representing surveyors who are active in the Party Wall etc. Act 1996.
The Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors is a progressive professional organisation for Party Wall Surveyors in England and Wales.
The Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors protects the public and furthers the profession by insistence upon high standards of professional conduct and competence.
The objective of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors is to promote and extend the practice, knowledge and study of the Party Wall Act and to encourage the exchange of information and ideas amongst members.
The Faculty provides referrals for appointments as Party Wall Surveyors.
The Faculty has legal support and counsel when required, which is available to all members.

MEMBER
This is for those who have sufficient knowledge of the Act, which can be supported by two party wall awards, ideally one as the agreed surveyor and one where you have been one of two surveyors.- Access to Members Area

FELLOW
This is for party wall surveyors who have a minimum of 5 years experience and who could act as a Third Surveyor. The requirement is also to attend Third Surveyor one day seminar.- Access to Members Area

This is for those professionals within the construction and legal disciplines who are not practising the Act but would benefit from direct access to an experienced practising party wall surveyor for advice and guidance on party wall matters, enabling them to provide their clients with accurate, unbiased advice.- Access to Members Area

How do I apply for membership?
The criteria and process to join the Faculty is dependent on the level of membership required but if you wish to become a practising party wall surveyor, having construction knowledge is a pre-requisite. Details of eligibility and application process for each level of membership we offer, are described below.
MEMBER
There are two routes to full membership:
Route One:
If you already have experience in dealing with party wall matters and have a sound knowledge of the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 and construction knowledge then you can apply for a direct interview. Your application will be supported by providing:
- Two awards – one where you are the agreed surveyor & one where you are one of two surveyors.
- Corresponding letters of appointment.
- A notice on behalf of the Building Owner.
- A letter to the Appointing Owners advising them of the name of the Third Surveyor that has been selected.
- A copy of the covering letter when serving the award.
Two copies of each of the Awards and supporting documentation are required to be submitted to the Administration Office at least two weeks prior to
The cost of the interview and obligatory purchase of the Faculty
Route Two:
If your experience in dealing with party wall matters is very limited but you have a construction industry background then you should attend our Two-day Party Wall Seminar. This takes you from serving ‘Notice’ to undertaking preparing an ‘Award’ as part of a paper exercise on the second day.
Once you have successfully completed our course you are eligible to apply for full membership of the Faculty, subject to attending an interview. Your membership application will be supported by submitting:
- Two awards – one where you are the agreed surveyor & one where you are one of two surveyors.
- Corresponding letters of appointment.
- A notice on behalf of the Building Owner.
- A letter to the Appointing Owners advising them of the name of the Third Surveyor that has been selected.
- A copy of the covering letter when serving the award.

The cost of the interview and obligatory purchase of the Faculty
FELLOW
This is for party wall surveyors who have a lot of experience dealing in party wall matters. You are required to be a Fellow if you wish to be recognised by the Faculty as a Third Surveyor. The requirement to become a Fellow is to attend a Third Surveyor
Once a Fellow of the Faculty, that person is then put on the Faculty’s Third Surveyor register used by both the appointing officer of the Local Authority and the Secretary of State.
Existing Member upgrade to Fellow Application:

Completed application form to be supported by:
- Third Surveyor award. If a ‘live’ Third Surveyor award is unavailable another option is to produce a ‘dummy’ award from instructions supplied with seminar paperwork.

An affiliate would also benefit from direct access to an experienced practising party wall surveyor for advice and guidance on party wall matters, enabling them to provide their clients with accurate, unbiased advice.
